Animals Have Rights Too

My sister and I are both animal lovers. If I lived in my own house, it would have looked like a zoo but my parents are not that keen on animals. My dad is OK with them but of the thirteen years that I have my two dogs, my mom has never pet them or cared for them at all. Isn’t that weird?

My sister subsequently moved to Tennessee and she says there is an animal rights non-profit organization called Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County.

But my sister and I are caught in a chicken and egg situation, in the way that we definitely would love to devote some time to charitable bodies on animal rights (there is an SPCA in my hometown), we both have to work very long hours that leave us no time to do what we want. And if we had spent time on charities like these, our families would be left wanting.

However, we always try to educate people on animal rights. Yes, animals have rights too, but you will be surprised how many people treat animals as some “thing”. Having kept pets all my life, I can certainly understand that animals have as much right as any human being to live in this world and as “higher beings”, we should care for and protect them.

Later on in life when we are more financially stable, my sister and I hope to be able to devote time and be hands-on in our favorite charities on animal rights.

It’s Not Always About The Payout

As a blogger who blogs for pay, I was asked if I only select high paying opps to write. Well, of course not. Blogging is more than that.

Recently, I was lucky to snag a $5 opp that brought me a lot of traffic from organic searches. See, $5 is considered a low paying opp but it brought me traffic that I would not have found. Although the topic is something that I am rather familiar with, I did not thought of writing about it earlier because I was not that passionate about the topic.

However, now that I have seen the volume of traffic that the selected keywords could generate, I would be exploiting it more and writing more on the said topic since I already know about the subject.

Many people do not understand how we could blog for pay. Besides the income, I do enjoy being introduced to all sorts of websites, services and subject matters that I would not otherwise have known about.

Let’s not forget about the traffic. Besides those that come from organic searches, there are also traffic from your colleagues and many other sources that could only help in your Alexa ranking. And what about the host of people whom I got to know through blogging?

Like I said, it’s not always about the money.

The All Important Tertiary Education

None my friends whom I got to know in adulthood believe that I do not have a college degree. They think I am pulling their leg but why should I downgrade myself? If I do have a college degree, I would have been proud to let others know, of course, unless I got it through warming the seat!

It is all the more ironic that unlike my friends, I do not have a degree education when both my uncle and aunt are prominent educationists in the country! What is that about the black sheep in the family?

In my own defense, it was not as if I did not study hard enough. I did aim for a university degree when I was in high school. Everyone was saying how it is THE only goal we should set for ourselves to reach and that having this coveted piece of certification would open up so many opportunities for us.

Having two educationists in the family means that my siblings, cousins and myself would be getting free study tips each time there was a family gathering. They did not just taught us how to study for a degree but how to score, how to get a first class degree. Naturally those were the times that I don’t have fond memories of because nobody wants to think of books during the holidays!

I put it all down to bad luck. Well, I really studied hard and even obtained rather good grades but before I managed to even enter university, my family went into financial distress and almost went bankrupt. When things became such, the family was in the verge of breaking up, there was no money and we did not even know when the next meal comes from, education was the last thing on my mind.

I had to go out to work, to earn, to support the family in whatever way I could. Being the youngest, I suffered the most because my brother and sister were already completing their tertiary education, and since I haven’t started yet, it seemed as if I have the least at stake.

Till today, I have a chip on my shoulder because society looks at people like me, people without a university degree, differently. Many people think that we are incapable of performing at work. I don’t think it is true because we do have worldly knowledge that we gained from working young!

It’s Saturday Over Here But …

…. it’s time to bite Kate! I have forgotten to do so in the last session, what with all the bad stuff happening over at the home front. So, things like this sure slip my mind.

But this time, I remembered! Well, I wanted to post this yesterday and then thought that I should post it on Saturday because it is still Friday over in Kansas. I have set my cell phone with different time zones:- Kuala Lumpur (my time zone), Tennessee (my sister’s time zone), Hong Kong, New York (Paul’s time zone) and Florida. As my list of foreign friends grows, I would have to make way for some of their time zones as well.

Sometimes I use WorldMate where everything is preset and what I need to do is just select the City. Too bad they have four slots only. I could also key in the cities on my own phone but it’s quite tedious.

Anyway, I am so tired, because I went to bed past 3am and set my alarm clock at 6am. What crazy hours I keep! Dreams also no chance to come!

Doctor – Patient Social Network Portal

Living with my two parents who are in their senior years and diagnosed with chronic diseases like hypertension and high cholesterol, it is not easy for them to manage their health, take their medication as prescribed and on time, and keep a close watch on their diet. I do what I can, as the dutiful daughter, but it is very stressful on me too.

Since both my parents are educated and slightly computer literate, I thought that they should get online to gain some knowledge on how to better manage their health. I asked my colleagues who also have elderly parents and they told me of med3q, a social networking site where doctors and patients come together to interact.

This site is free and anyone could join. Med3d has the tagline, It’s your health. Make it personal, which I think is rather apt. Everyone should take control of his own health.

I told my parents about their site and I urge them to register with the site. If they need to interact with a medical professional, they always could, and anonymously too, if they so wish. Moreover, they can receive free advice without feeling like they are taking up too much of their doctor’s time.

Med3d also has a separate section called BizRx, which is for doctors only, and this section is created to help doctors to be better business people on top of being good, caring doctors.

If you do have parents who are living with a chronic disease or another, do check out med3q. It’s more than a resource site, it’s also a social network site where patients can lend support to each other.

If I Could Blog For 24 Hours Non-Stop

I would blog about my monkeys!

Like any proud mother who could forever blog about her children, I do not have children so I would love the opportunity to blog about my monkeys. If I were to get paid to blog for 24 hours non-stop, I would do it but if it’s free like the Blogathon, even if it was for charity, then better to save the Blogosphere from stories of my monkeys, not all of them are happy, joyful stories, if you have read An Anonymous Journal.

Right now, although I CAN absolutely blog about my monkeys as I like since I do have my own blog like other mummy bloggers who love blogging about their children and publishing their photos all over the blog, I think I would rather spare my readers pictures of my monkeys!

But then I have been pondering for a long time that I would love to create a comic strip of my two monkeys but the project never took of the ground. I so would love to set up a website featuring comic strips of my two monkeys like those that I read in my Sunday comics like Blondie and Peanuts.

Unfortunately, I don’t even know how to draw to save my life and no artist I know love my monkeys as much as I do to be committed to the project, perhaps unless that are commissioned to do so? >.< "

The Definitive Online Travel Guide

After nine long months of working non-stop, my friend advised me to take a break to avoid burn out. I spent two days doing nothing and got bored out of my mind! I decided that I had to get away so I went online to do some research. I have previously been on travel sites many times but I found this very unique travel guide that is an accumulation of travel news and tips from real travelers with real photos featured in a host of travel blogs.

Little did I know that this travel guide known as Real Travel is the definitive travel guide and travel planner with a wealth of travel information, advice and reviews from people who have actually been to these places.

Real Travel has a blog where the Editor picks the best submissions in stories and photos plus destinations that come highly recommended by travel bugs of the Real Travel community.

After browsing through the travel guide, it really is not easy to select the country that I would most like to visit. They all look so interesting! The most important of all would be the one that fits my budget the most. What tough choices!
