Most Dangerous Countries Online

I read an article on a new report released by a cyber security company that Myanmar has been found as the “most dangerous country” in the world when it comes to cyber threat. It is followed by the United States at number two, Taiwan at number three, Russia at number four and China at number five.

1. Myanmar
2. United States
3. Taiwan
4. Russia
5. China

This quarterly statement by Akamai called “State of the Internet Report” stated that it’s unusual for Myanmar to suddenly appear, when the company has been tracking cyber threats for the past four years.

Selangor Broadband Penetration At 71.3%

According to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), broadband penetration in the state of Selangor stands at 71.3%, which far exceeds the government target of only 57% at the end of last year.

According to a regional director of MCMC this is because of government efforts of bridge the digital divide, especially the free netbook programme, where netbooks are given to children whose parents earn less than RM3000 a month and do not have internet connection at home.

While it is well and good that the government is doing this to help the poorer students, I really do not see why students are not able to study without going online. During my time, I didn’t even have a computer. Is that why I didn’t perform well in school? That couldn’t be!

UniFi Now In Melaka

A friend, who lives in Kuala Lumpur, has just subscribed to UniFi. He told me that it’s cheaper than his current Streamyx package. Well, who asked him to take up the 4MB package? LOL

Even his 4MB package is even cheaper than what I am paying in Ipoh. I’m paying RM110 for only 1MB package. The reason is that the copper telephone lines in my area are unable to support anything faster than that. Isn’t that just too bad? Anyway, my friend is still waiting for UniFi to be installed at his home.

Yesterday, I read that UniFi is now in Melaka. Aiyo… when will we get it in Ipoh? I’m not on a contract and I can switch anytime!

Facebook Public Wall

Recently, I have been trying to contact an organization. So I finally managed to get hold of one guy who is a committee member of the organization but he asked me to contact the body directly and one of the administrators will get back to me.

The problem is that I was given a link to a Facebook page and boy, even after “Liking” the Page, I am not able to send them a message, except to post on their public wall. I think they have disabled messaging or something.

Now, these people have failed to understand that no everyone is comfortable sharing “issues” on the public wall of a social website where all my “friends” would be able to view my post.

Google+ Mass Account Deletion

I read over the weekend that Google has deleted many of their Google+ users for not using real names. Oops… I checked my Google+ account and it is still there. The scary thing is that Google deleted these people who didn’t use their real names without informing them about the deletion.

Worse, some of these people who have been deleted have also been locked out of other Google services, like Gmail and Google Docs. Now, I can understand why Google feels the need to delete Google+ accounts without real names but I think they have gone too far to lock people out of their other Google services accounts just because of that. After all, all these services share the same login ID and password.

‘123456’ Password For Hotmail No Longer Works

Hotmail will be beefing up their password feature and common passwords like “123456” and “password” will no longer be accepted. Those who are already using these common words or phrases right now, will be requested to strengthen their passwords when they next log in.

Besides these very common passwords, many users also share the same passwords using simple sentences like “ilovedogs”. Hotmail will also try to determine these and make users enter a stronger password.

In addition, friends who receive spam from a particular email account could easily alert Hotmail that the email account has been hacked and used to spam or for other fraud purposes. If found to be true, the email account will be suspended so that the scammer cannot use it anymore. However, the legitimate owner also cannot use it and have to prove ownership.

1.3 Million Websites Shut in 2010 in China

A reported stated that in 2010, about 1.3 million websites were shut down in China alone. As we know, China is extremely strict when it comes to what goes on online, though the authorities have maintained that freedom of speech is not restricted though many news websites and social media networks are blocked. Many of these websites are pornographic in nature.

Despite the many websites that have seen death, there has been a huge increase in the number of webpages, by as much as 79% compared to the previous year. This means that although the number of websites is lower, the websites that survived have stronger content.

Anyway, despite blocks and even bans, China residents still have ways to get around the virtual Great Wall of China, in order to access independent news.
