Reducing Hosting Costs

Many of my blogger friends, who used to receive decent revenue from their blogs, told me that blogging cannot bring in that kind of income that it could. Some of them even gave up blogging as new interests take up their time. Well, I think that once a blogger always a blogger, even if it doesn’t earn anymore.

I too am looking to reduce my blog hosting costs, actually. My blog host has just told me to make a quick decision because I have delayed upgrading my hosting account. My bandwidth consumption keeps increasing as I gain higher traffic volume but since I am not making money, I have to pay for additional bandwidth out of my own pocket. Obviously, I didn’t tell him that I am in the midst of looking for a cheaper web host!

I got to know of this affordable hosting by imhosted.com and I like the fact that at just US$3.95 per month, we would be getting unlimited webhosting space with unlimited bandwidth. That’s less than US$50 for a year of unlimited hosting, and don’t forget, the first month is free, which makes web hosting even more affordable.

Being non-technical, I am glad to note that customer support is provided 24/7 so even if we are hosting our website for the first time, it shouldn’t be a problem.

FarmVille Raised US$1.5million For Haiti

If you play any Facebook game at all, you would know that these are all just time wasters. Well, FarmVille players have done the game and community proud by donating over US$1 million o Haiti, a country that was wrecked by an earthquake last year. Rehabilitation of the country needs lots of money and people from around the world have chipped in, including FarmVille players.

FarmVille players did not have to donate real cash if they didn’t want to but they could buy one of those limited edition Haiti Relief Fund items for their game, and support the cause indirectly. For most of us chronic players, we didn’t even have to pay with actual money because we have collected some Facebook credits which we could use towards the purchase of such in-game merchandise.

So it looks like it is not that pointless after all tending our virtual farm. People from all over the world, by just sitting in front of the computer, could lend a helping hand to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

AOL Buys The Huffington Post For US$315 million

AOL, the old dial-up internet service provider, in a bid to turn around the company and focus itself on media and entertainment, has decided to purchase The Huffington Post for US$315 million. This purchase has been approved by the Board of Directors and is expected to happen in the late first quarter or early second quarter of the year. US$300 million is expected to be paid in cash. The balance will probably be paid in shares. The co-founder of The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington, will be leading The Huffington Post Media Group, which means that she will be pocketing cash and have a job too.

I find it pretty amazing that The Huffington Post which was stared in 2005 has grown so much in the few short years that it could be sold at US$315 million… but then again these old internet giants have never been able to make wise decisions as they grapple to catch up with newer dotcoms. Just look at the losses suffered by AOL and Yahoo! when they have to shut down websites that they have acquired for hundreds of millions of dollars.

Malaysian Women Victims of Scam 419 Online

I read with concern that there seems to be more cases of Scam 419 in Malaysia where victims got to know these scammers via Facebook, and of course, other social networks. These scammers start milking cash from victims after a few months of intensive chatting online.

Perhaps the reason I felt that there are more cases because victims are coming out to lodge police reports and inform the media so that others do not fall victim to such scams. Or maybe there really are more people falling victim because more and more women are getting on the internet.

I wonder why, although there are plenty of such reports featured in the papers, there are still people continue to be victimised and only realise that they have conned when they have lost tens of thousands of Ringgit. By then, it would already be too late and they would be heavily in debt.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Malaysian women are more foolish than women in other countries. There are victims all over the world. And obviously, not only women become victims. Even men get conned too.

Kate Middleton (From Kent) Suspended From Facebook

I find this story pretty amusing. Of course it’s amusing because it didn’t happen to me but I can sympathise with this Kate Middleton from Kent who is in trouble with Facebook just because she shares the same name with the future Queen of England.

Although Facebook says that we cannot create an account with a fake ID and many celebrity names and trademarks have been blocked from being registered, it’s a problem when it’s our REAL name, like this case with Kate Middleton from Kent. The funnier thing is that Kate Middleton of Kent has a boyfriend who also shares the name of a celebrity; Jonathan Ross.

What doesn’t make sense is that if Facebook things that this was a fake account, then wouldn’t the boyfriend of Kate Middleton be Prince William instead of Jonathan Ross? Haha!

Google Offers

Google is venturing into local deals, much like what Groupon is doing, where groups of people purchase coupons for a limited-time deal. For example, a hair cut at a local salon is being offered at 70% off normal rates or something like that.

Google Offers is actually late in the game. Even in Malaysia, we already have quite a few companies offering this same deals concept, some would offer a deal a day without the condition of bulk purchase so buyers do not have to wait if a certain number of coupons are sold before enjoying the discounts, which I personally like.

But even though Google is late, with their capital, they could surely make this big. That’s an advantage they have. And with their money, they surely could polish the business model. Let’s see how this turns out for them.

Lil Wayne Deletes His Twitter Account

For the second time, Lil Wayne’s Twitter account has been hacked and the hacker, using that account, sent out tweets to Lil Wayne’s friends, including hip hop stars 50 Cent, The Game and Soulja Boy. Soulja Boy even received an insulting message from the hacker on the poor sales figures of his latest album, DeAndre Way.

In the first hacking incident, Lil Wayne reacted with an angry outburst. I guess he has had enough of being hacked now that it has happened for the second time. Another angry outburst wouldn’t help. Just delete the account. That’s the best solution. Lil Wayne isn’t the first and only celebrity to leave Twitter after all.
