Important Updates, Update Reminders, Security Alerts and Security Verifications

Over this past week, I have been receiving numerous messages from major banks in Malaysia with the subject header: Important Update, Update Reminder, Security Alert, Security Verification or something or other with just an urgent or important tone.

The most common “banks” are Maybank, CIMB and Public Bank. Of course, when I use inverted commas on the word bank, you will know that these email messages are not from the real banks. They are phishing attempts and I am glad that my email spam filter managed to catch all of them!

Do know that a reputable bank will never send you an email and for that matter call you on the phone requiring you to disclose your log in details and other credentials in an unsecured environment.

And even if a bank or financial institution suffers a lapse of judgment by doing so, you should NEVER click on any link provided, for your convenience, in an email. Access the website directly from your browser by typing in the address in the address bar manually. If you are using Firefox, the browser will let you know that you have accessed a trusted website by showing green on the address bar.

Take care of your security online!

Google Threatens To Pull Out Of China

Much has been said about Google’s threat of pulling out of China completely after facing censorship and cyber attacks from the government over the past few years. Who will win in this battle; Google or China?

I think the ones who will lose out are the people in China. The ones who will suffer the most will be expatriates and returning Chinese who were educated overseas. The internet is supposed to be borderless and I am sure these people expect to use the same internet services that they have used while overseas.

On the other hand, it is not so bad for Chinese people who have not been overseas and exposed to the freedom of the internet. To these people, the web is like a playground where they seek entertainment and friendship, unlike many of us who make use of the internet to help us work better.

I think that in the end, the lack of freedom of the web in China will drive away many returnees to seek employment overseas or to start up businesses in countries where they have a better chance of succeeding. This in turn will create brain drain in China.

What do you think?

Looking For The Ultimate Romantic Vacation

Steve, an old friend, will be getting married at the end of May. The poor guy had to postpone his wedding two times since last year because of deaths in the family. He said that he is tired of preparing for his wedding for the third time and would prefer to just get away for a holiday wedding where no guests are allowed. I certainly can understand his frustration.

I suggested to Steve that a romantic cancun vacation would be very suitable for him. It could be a dream wedding away from home without the couple having to get stressed over yet another round of wedding preparation.

Steve likes the idea a lot but it will take some convincing before the elders would allow them to marry without their presence but I think they can always hold a small wedding reception for the family later, when they have returned from their holiday wedding.

Celcom Free USB Modem

I was very happy to see that Celcom is giving away a free USB modem since I am contemplating splitting my data and voice services into two SIM cards. I am currently using one SIM card only for both services.

So I went to Celcom office this morning to seek further information. I was told that I can terminate my current data plan and register for a new plan. I will have to pay RM100 registration fee plus RM10 stamp duty. And then I will also have to pay either RM68 or RM98 for the package that I am subscribing to. But I will receive a free USB modem.

The bad thing is that this Celcom free USB modem is locked which means that it could only work with a Celcom data SIM card and nothing else. Also, although it is stated that there is no contract, if I were to terminate my subscription to Celcom data plan, I will have to return the “free” USB modem to Celcom and if they say that there is something wrong with the USB modem somehow, I will have to pay RM150 penalty.

I think that it is not worth subscribing for me. Maybe it is for you.

Split Or Not

I am currently in two minds if I should split my Celcom data and voice plan subscription into two SIM cards. Right now, although I am subscribed to two plans, I am using a shared SIM card. Of course, there are advantages and disadvantages.

For one, using a shared SIM, I would only have to carry one mobile phone if I were to move around in town and still be able to use my phone for calls and text messages as well as connect to the internet. If I were to use to separate SIM cards, I would have to carry two mobile phones; one for voice and text and the other for data.

If I have two SIM cards and connected to the internet via a USB modem, I would still be able to make and receive calls and text messages. On the other hand, with only one SIM, once I am connected to the internet via a USB modem, I would not be able to use my phone functions.

I could still connect to the internet on my laptop or desktop PC via my mobile phone if I only have one SIM card but that seriously kills my mobile phone battery. SIGH….. too many options and I don’t even know what’s the best option for me.

Google – Word Of The Decade

It’s interesting to know that 2010 s not only a New Year but also a new decade. I was wishing everyone “Happy New Decade” on 1st January, 2010.

I came across an article that says that according to the American Dialect Society, that Google (verb) is the number one word of the last decade. Last decade, Google beat other popular verbs like “green,” “blog,” “text,” “9/11,” and “war on terror”. Who is surprised? I have been using Google as a verb like forever and so has everyone that I know of.

In this same article is a mention of a list compiled by CBS of popular verbs in the last decade by year and I am quite shocked that words like 9/11 was a word from 2001 and WMD (Weapons of Mass Descrtion) was a word from 2002. YouTube was fro 2006 while Facebook was from 2007 while H1N1 and sexting (texting sexual messages) were from 2009. My, how time flies!

I wonder what popular terms or words will rule in 2010.

Domain Renewal Coupon Codes

I hate January because this is the month when most of my domain name expires. It’s great to have my own domains, of course, but when January comes around, I cringe just looking at the invoice from my web host. Unfortunately, most of the time, I am unable to find coupon codes for domain renewal.

Often times, my friends would ask me which web hosting company to go with for their first domain name purchase and web hosting service and usually I am unable to determine for them and ask them to go to websites like AlreadyHosting.com to read reviews of the current top ten web hosts and to compare features and pricing and make the decision themselves.

AlreadyHosting.com doesn’t only provide us with web hosting news and views, this is where we could also find web hosts that provide free domain names just for signing up for a web hosting plan.

This is also where web hosting coupon codes are provided. You’d be surprised to know that unlike the unavailability of coupon codes for domain renewals, there are a plenty of coupon codes for webhosting to choose from that could save us a considerable amount of money. Imagine getting a website hosted for only $0.01 per month! If almost free web-hosting is what you have been looking for, then head over to AlreadyHosting.com to grab the coupon code!
