At Times When Technology Fails

Ultra Frust!!! I have been trying to get connected to the internet for the past hour as I had a post to submit but I get an error that says either my USB device has malfunctioned, or that my modem is not connected or my bluetooth is not working.

If you read my previous post, you would know that my regular connection is not working, perhaps due to my telephone cable because all other hardware seems to be fine. Yet, I could not get online like I normally could. Beats me why…

So I am using my 3G line that I have subscribed s a back up plan for just moments like this. I have been connecting this way since 8am yesterday morning and just now, the line got so slow that I decided to disconnect to reconnect… and that was when all the error were thrown at me.

I was so frustrated I could cry. Not because I could not live without the internet but only because there is money at stake.

Starting An Online Business

The other day, someone wanted to know what is the capital required to start an online business. Well, the beauty of online businesses is that we can start one without too much capital. I know a friend who only started with RM200 selling Discount Sunglasses on eBay.

Of course, with a tight budget, she had to really hunt for a supplier of Wholesale Discount Sunglasses and could not afford to waste money. Even so, having a small start up capital is no excuse to procure inferior quality goods.

Luckily for her, she managed to get a good source for Wholesale Discount Sunglasses and has been doing good business ever since.

I did ask her why she thought that there would be a market for sunglasses, and she said that it’s a fashion item that young people and people who are young at heart would always want to look good, hence changing their sunglasses ever so often. Moreover, living in Malaysia, where we get the sun half the year, there are not many people here who do not own at least a pair of sunglasses!

Discounts In Hotels

My friend, Lawrence, told me that there were so many Spanish speaking people in the United States. Lawrence was posted to Spain to work this past year and he thought that by going to America for a vacation, he would be getting a change of scene but it did not look like that, Haha!

According to Lawrence, most of his colleagues have told him that it is not easy to make hotel reservations and holiday travel plans because there is a lack of such websites in Spanish. They do speak English but not that well. And they keep telling Lawrence, what they want is just descuento en hoteles. Actually, don’t we all???

Lawrence did tell them that Hotels.com has a sister site in Spanish that is specially set up to cater to Spanish speaking people, particularly in America but of course, other Spanish speakers are welcome to use it to plan a vacation as well. With a site in their native language, it would be a whole lot easier for them to make hotel reservations!

Nokia E61i vs. iPhone

Friends know that I am unhappy with my E61i. There are various reasons why I am not satisfied with it, of course, but I am not going to repeat myself.

Today, I woke up at 7.30am and found that I could not connect to my broadband internet. I checked with the technical department and they said that my line is fine but my log is not showing a connection. They say that based on my description, my modem is fine and that the problem is my line and they would put in a report for me, though I would have to wait for any solution within two working days. Since it’s Saturday, I could only expect to hear from them on Tuesday at the earliest.

I called up my regular computer shop and told them there is no light for DSL and they told me to take my modem and wireless router for them to check which I did. They said that they are both fine. But I left my cable at the shop and had to make a return trip to pick it up. What lah…. waste my time only!

I could of course connect to the internet with my 3G connection via my Nokia E61i. This is the reason I got the phone in the first place (and its QWERTY keypad). So, without wi-fi, where I purposely got the wireless modem soon after I received my iPhone, the iPhone is pretty useless now. What it could do is just play music and video and act as my alarm clock, in place of the Nokia.

But even with 3G connection, it is not like broadband. My Nokia has been working over time today since 8am till now and it zaps the battery. I had to keep it charging! But thank God for it or I would not be able to get online to work. So if you ask me if iPhone is better than my E61i, right now, I would have to say, “NO.”

Preparing For Mortgage Lending Exams

I wrote in a post on another blog of mine recently about being introduced to a mortgage lender. Well, this guy told me that it is not easy to qualify to be a mortgage lender he had to sit for exams in order to qualify to be one. I have heard of this Mortgage Exam before but I don’t know what mortgage lending will be tested on.

I was told to check out the website of Exam-prep.com which has products to help potential real estate agents prepare for this exam and embark on a successful career in real estate. To have preparation material, it sure looks like this is a very serious and important exam!

Apart from the book, Mortgage Lending Principles & Practices, Exam-Prep.com also offers two softwares for people who intend to sit for the Mortgage Lending Exam and Ohio Loan Officer Exam. I think it’s great that they have the preparation material in software format because some people study better using software! I know I will.

These three items are actually downloadable products which we can download to our computer and use straightway. The two softwares even come with free trials where we can use for a certain period of time and then upgrade or licenses, or not.

I think that these are must-haves for people seriously thinking of embarking in a career in mortgage lending.

Bloggers Unite: Blogging For Hope

I got to know of this BlogCatalog initiated Bloggers Unite charity blogging where bloggers are encouraged to set aside one particular day to do an act of kindness and then blog about it, submit pictures to prove their charitable act and to win prizes, including an iPod touch.

You know, I always believed that we do charity because we want to not because a blogging company asked us to and dangle and iPod in front of us. And to tell about our charitable deed, well, it just cancels whatever brownie points we have garnered.

To me, acts of kindness is usually random and not pre-planned unless it’s done during one of the many annual festivities.

If you have done an act of kindness, will you blog about it? I won’t. But then maybe it is just me *shrug*

Subscribe To Discount Magazines Online

My sister told me that she just received her year end gift from her boss who took out a magazine subscription for her. According to my sister, these are very popular gifts especially to people whom we know love to read books and magazines.

I decided to check out websites that offer magazine subscriptions online and came upon this site at http://www.magazine-agent.com. There are so many titles available here that there is bound to be just the right magazine for any interest. What actually surprised me was the wide difference between the cover price and the price being offered by Magazine-Agent.com. From what I could see, we are able to save up to 80% off cover price.

If you think that these discount magazines are magazines that nobody wants to read then you should check out the site. They have O: The Oprah Magazine, Men’s Health, Reader’s Digest, Maxim, Sports Illustrated and many more widely read magazine titles, even Spanish language ones.

I have been thinking of a new gift for Christmas and this idea just came in time. In fact, besides giving it as a gift, it would be great to subscribe for myself as well and I get to save so much compared to my current magazine subscriptions!
