All Our Facebook Content Belong To Us!

After two weeks of intense objection from Facebook users, Facebook has decided to rollback their Terms of Use and User policy to the old copy instead of the new one which says that old our Facebook content and user profile belong to Facebook and they could do whatever they want with that information.

Of course, that is most irresponsible, even unscrupulous, for Facebook to change the rules of the game mid-way, seeing that they are currently the most popular social networking site.

After two weeks, I am glad to see that Faceook realizes that they can’t afford to make all their members pissed off with their new privacy policy. Even so, it doesn’t look like they are backing off. They just asked for a little more time to see what they could do with our profiles. LOL

Web Hosting Rating & Reviews

My friend, Warren, is not a blogger but after the latest scandal that beset Eli Wong and seeing how my blogger friends and I benefitted from that, he too would like to try blogging. I actually persuaded him to set up a blog a couple of years back and told him that should he set up a blog, to let me know so that I could help him find the right webhosting. You see, after setting out on the wrong footing, I didn’t want him to repeat my mistakes.

Hosting his own blog is one of the most important aspects of a blogger. I also told him that he could compare web hosts from Web Hosting Rating which allows him to compare various hosting packages from top webhosts. Cheap is not what he should look out for but reliability and features that would meet his needs, though as a new blogger, I believe he would need only the basics.

I find the web hosting review provided on Web Hosting Rating exceptionally helpful, particularly for a totally new webmaster like Warren. What I would look out for, besides maximum uptime, is unparallel customer service.

If you plan to set up a website or blog, you too should check the web reviews provided by Web Hosting Rating.

DNS Checking Tool

Some people think that I am crazy for owning more than ten domain names. Not all of them are blogs, luckily. Some are personal websites. I would say that although I was apprehensive of owning domain names at the beginning, I am still not that confident of running them smoothly.

If you have read my post a few days ago, my internet connection went bonkers. I thought that I could get some work done outside so I took my laptop to a cafe for their wi-fi connection only to find that my server was down. I couldn’t get hold of friends to check my server for me using another internet connection. I was totally frustrated to say the least.

Today, I got to know of this DNS Tool Site which proves to be very helpful in running tests on the domain name to ensure that it is configured correctly and that it is running smoothly.

I know that I am not the only non-technical-minded webmistress around so I hope that readers will find this tool useful as well when checking the DNS server.

Running so many blogs and websites, my main concern is to have my sites up and running at all times. Naturally, I need them to be configured such. Luckily, Host Tests DNS checking tool site is very user-friendly.

Google Valentine’s 2009 Logo

Google’s Valentine’s logo in conjunction with today, Valentine’s Day, is totally lame. This is the logo that appeared on my Google Malaysia page. I am uncertain if there are other versions on other people’s Google page. The file name of this logo says its version 2, though. How does version 1, or version 3 look like? Google.com doesn’t seem like it has any Valentine’s Day logo at all, though.

Although I am not an artist I could just imagine there are so many more ways to make this logo so much better. This one looks like the work of someone new. I know that the artist tried to keep it simple but there are many ways to make it simple and yet look good at the same time keep within the regulations of the Google logo.

WP Designer Themes Club Invoice

I was a WP Designer Themes Club member where membership was only US$5 per year and we were promised free access, download and use of exclusive WordPress themes throughout the year of at least one new theme per month.

WP Designer had a pretty good concept whereby the brainchild, Small Potato, who is also a WordPress theme designer himself, proposed to combine effort with a handful of WordPress theme designers to come up with at least twelve new WordPress themes per year.

With membership at US$5 per year to the WP Designer Themes Club, I felt that it was a pretty good deal since I have fifteen WordPress powered blogs and having access to exclusive premium WordPress themes, I felt it was well worth the money.

However, Small Potato sold his website, along with his WordPress themes club and members for a small fortune, believing that the new owner will continue running the club in the same spirit and offering new premium WordPress themes to us members.

As far as I know, the new owner, after many long months, started refunding members their US$5 fee. Strangely, today, I received an invoice from WP Designer asking for US$5. Sigh. What an oversight!

UK Cheapest Domain Name & Web Hosting

If you remember, a couple of months ago, I had a terrible fall out with the webhost of my friend. He now knows that each time he purchases a new domain name, he is to make sure that there are no hidden charges and that he will be getting what is stipulated in the domain name and web hosting package. Most importantly, he now knows that he MUST have the domain name registered under his own name.

My cousin, Jasmine, asked me if she should set up a website after learning that I have one. I said she should because living in the UK, she could easily buy domain hosting that is not only affordable but user-friendly and comes with adequate customer support, especially for a new webmaster like herself.

One thing I like about UK-Cheapest is that they make sure to list the prices that we are paying. There are no hidden charges to surprise us at the end of the year, they allow us to make unlimited changes to our website using their friendly web building tool, unlimited nameserver changes, unlimited email forwarding addresses and many more features which other webhosts may impose charges on, like my friend discovered, unfortunately.

If you are in the United Kingdom and looking for a webhost, the good news is that your purchase of web hosting with UK-Cheapest will come with a free .UK domain name of your choice for two years. This domain name will be registered under your own name. Isn’t that great?

Technology Woes

So it was as if it wasn’t enough to have a computer down. It’s Ok, I still have the use of another desktop computer, a laptop, an iPhone and a mobile device. Just when I wanted to work on the computer, my internet line went down. It’s OK too, I have my back up internet line in my Celcom 3G.

But what do you know? That wasn’t enough because I can’t seem to get some websites to open. Some were fine, though. Anyway, I called up Streamyx at 100 from my homeline but darnn it, even that 100 line was down! Could you believe it?

I thought that maybe I should just give up the crap and go work outside. I took my laptop to Big Apple to steal their wi-fi. Their line was fast even though I had to share with a couple of other people.

Guess what? I STILL could not work because now, my own server was down. What the hell??? After trying to access my own blogs for over half an hour to no avail, I gave up and headed up.

My Streamyx connection was back but my server was still down. It was another 30 minutes or so before I could get some of my work done for the night. Damn pissed because all of these took me 3.5 hours!!!
