Yahoo! Shuts 360°

Here’s bad news for you if you use Yahoo! 360°. I received an announcement from them a couple of days ago that they will be shutting down the service on 13th July 2009.

I remember some years ago when Yahoo! First launched 360° to help us connect better with our friends and family who are also Yahoo! Users, I received quite a few invitations from friends to set up a 360° page. I did but luckily I never put more effort on it than just inputting my name and location. I feel for those who have spent time blogging on Yahoo! 360° and even took pains to create a custom Yahoo! 360° template.

Even though users would be able to take along their content to a new Yahoo profile and blog that Yahoo is offering, they would not be able to take along their custom theme.

Writing from memory, off hand, I could remember that Yahoo has already close Photos, Briefcase and Geocities. Now, they are closing 360°. I wonder what is next. Would it be Yahoo! Mail?

Gmail To Be Out Of Beta Soon

I read that Google is considering bringing Gmail out of Beta, after five years of first launching their popular webmail service.

If you have read about my bad experience with Gmail, though I still continue to use it, I am rather apprehensive that they will be out of Beta.

I wrote to them about the problem that I faced and can you believe that for such a serious security breach, they have chosen to ignore my concerns? Yes, until today, so many months after, or perhaps it already has been more than a year, I have not even heard back from anyone who works in the Google Gmail office.

Bah, Google better make sure that they have covered all security holes before declaring Gmail free from Beta because then, there would be no room for errors.

Microsoft New Search Service Bing

Microsoft has a new search service which they have decided to name “BING” and hopes to give Google a run for their money.

According to Microsoft people, the sound of BING is like the sound of “I FOUND IT’. Funny, I thought it was TING! instead?

So I went to the website Bing.com and sure enough, it has been acquired by Microsoft but the site is empty right now at this point of writing. They are really slow. I think if they are thinking of threatening Google and trying to acquire a share of the search pie, they do have quite a long way to come!

Website User Friendliness

In a previous post, I mentioned how important website user friendliness is. Lately, I have been surfing to a lot of websites that list used car for sale and have been having a hard time looking for the used cars that I am interested in not because they do not have these on the websites but because I just could not search them out and narrow down my search results in an easy, friendly way.

I find that if a website requires me to do more than necessary to get to the information that I want, I tune out and then close my browser. That’s pretty easy to do. LOL

I would write to these sites with suggestions if I have the time or know that they would appreciate feedback like this but I have had a bad experience last time and stopped doing so. Not that I have the time to be a busybody, in the first place.

Acceptable Downtime

I was complaining to a friend that my blogs were offline for about 16 hours that day due to server overload and I had to get that resolved before the server administrators would put my blogs live again.

My friend told me that I should host with him and that his up time is great. However, he added that 16 hours is not long. Imagine my shock. I wonder how long a downtime is acceptable. 16 hours is definitely not OK in my books. Even with my blogs 30 minutes offline would make me pull my hair out already.

I am not going to host my blogs with him simply for the fact that he thinks 16 hours is no big deal!! Luckily, since my server problem has been resolved, I have not faced another “outage” but during this time, my friend had issues with his own server as well.

Yahoo! Mail Unavailable

For the past couple of months whenever I remember to log in to my Yahoo! Mail account to check my junk email (yes, that account, my very first email account has been taken over by spammers), I received a notice that my email could not be accessed and that I should try again later, failing which I should contact Yahoo.

The thing is, this shouldn’t happen in the first place and for numerous times too. Even though this account has more spam mail than legitimate email, when I check it, I expect to be able to access it and not told to come back later. After all, the internet never sleeps, does it?

Also, I was told that I should contact Yahoo and quote a certain error code. The problem is, where should I write to? Shouldn’t Yahoo make it easier for us to seek help by providing us an email address in the note or at least a link to their help centre?

Limited Connectivity On Wireless

I’ve been having a limited connectivity issue when connecting my laptop to the internet via wireless. The problem is that it doesn’t happen straightaway but the signal could suddenly drop after a few hours of connection without a problem.

When this happens, I check my other systems right away to find that my modem and router still function. I even try connecting to the internet on my mobile devices via wireless and everything seems fine.

I called up the shop where I bought my laptop from and the lady asked me to bring it in for a checkup. I called up the shop where I bought the router from and the guy told me that it’s possibly a settings problem and I should reset it. Hhhhmm who is right?

I have not done anything so far; just changed my router. LOL I always take the easy way out. With my back up router, so far, I haven’t experienced a drop in connection but then maybe I haven’t been using my laptop long enough for it to happen!
