US Senators Demand Facebook Privacy Changes

Before I registered an account with Facebook, I was pretty concerned about their privacy policies,. Of course, like the majority of users who signed up with Facebook, I did not bother to read the entire, or at all, the user agreement.

But registered I did because of many of my friends were already on it, and since then, Facebook has undergone so many changes, visually and in text that many of us have failed to keep up with the changes, but continued to use the website.

Now, with the latest development with Facebook, especially with its “Like” link, US Senators are demanding Facebook change its privacy policy and to let the users decide which websites we want our personal information shared. I totally agree. Who wants to leave a trail all over the web?

The Facebook users that we should be concerned about are not those who use the website regularly but those who signed up and then forgot that they even have a Facebook account because with every update, we have to recheck our privacy and security settings or else they will revert to “default” settings.

Credit Card Info Of Blippy Users Exposed

A friend alerted me of this issue because he is concerned about the breach of security of a website called Blippy. Both of us have never heard of Blippy prior to this piece of news but then why would be bother with a website that allows someone to share his or her online transactions with the world?

Blippy logo

If you have seen screenshots of the site before, the interface is like Twitter but status updates will all be transaction records of online purchases. Why would anyone wants to share such information? I really don’t get it.

Anyway, someone discovered that Google search engine robots picked up some stuff from Blippy, including a list of transactions with credit card numbers. According to Blippy co-founder, Philip Kaplan, those credit card numbers belong to four people. Four is not an earth shattering number but still, if you are a Blippy user, you should be concerned!

Google Street View Snaps Woman 43 Times

I found this news very interesting where Terry Southgate reports that out of curiosity, decided to log on to Google Street View to view his home village of Elmswell in Suffolk and was surprised to see that his wife was captured on screen a total of 43 times while she was walking her dog!

According to him, the Google Street View car took the same route as his wife, Wendy. She probably is not web savvy and does not know about the controversy that surrounds Google Street View. I mean, anyone who sees this car would know that he is at risk of being snapped and broadcast online. If I was her, I would have tried to lose the car, you know?

In any case, this report makes a valid case to argue against Google that their Street View violates the privacy of ordinary folks on the Street.

Drag & Drop Attachments To Gmail

Gmail, in a blog post, unveiled an awesome feature that allows us to drag and drop our attachments to a email compose box without having to click on the browse button and opening the file upload dialogue box. I think it’s very convenient and time saving because it allows us to drag multiple files into the file attachment area without doing it one by one, manually.

At the moment, Gmail has said that this feature is only supported by Firefox 3.6 and Chrome browsers but even though I am using Firefox 3.6, I don’t see this feature on my account but it is available in another Gmail account that I am managing.

What I am guessing is that this feature is only rolled out to some Gmail accounts while some others will have to wait a little while. I could be wrong, though. Are you seeing this yet?

AOL: Sell Or Kill Bebo

A few days ago, AOL announced that they are going to let go of Bebo, a social network site that was once the most popular among British teens and was acquired by AOL two years ago for US$850 million.

According to an internal memo, AOL said that they are no longer able to fund the social network site and compete with other social websites like Twitter and Facebook. Social networking business is highly competitive and social sites need to continue to innovate, to stay fresh to keep users. Facebook and Twitter may be the most popular social network sites right now but their hold could be broken by a hot newcomer too.

Although AOL is looking for a serious investor for Bebo, they are not discounting shutting down the website altogether and declaring Bebo a “loss” to the company, hence availing of certain tax incentives.

Awesome Web Hosting Deal

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Nexx Inc. All opinions are 100% mine.

Frankly, with my sites, I am quite reluctant to move to a new host and server because of all the work involved so no matter how attractive a deal is, I have to give it a pass. However, I still make it a point to check out the latest web hosting deals because as a webmistress managing multiple websites, I am always asked questions related to web hosting by friends who fancy owning a website too.

I came across this awesome web hosting package that is only US$10 for one year of Unlimited Web Hosting that comes with a free .com domain name of choice.

Besides unlimited diskspace, bandwidth and email, which is all important if you are running a large or traffic heavy website, a subscriber to this new web hosting package will also receive $50 credit each for Google AdWords and Facebook Ads. These are essential for bringing your new website to the masses.

In addition, even though you are only paying US$10 for one year, you will still be provided with 24/7 Customer Support so even if you are a total newbie when it comes to installing a website or blog, you can utilize the one-click WordPress and blog installation features and request for techincal support to help you out.

From my experience, only paying US$10 for such a good web hosting package is very rare but do be informed that after one year, you will be charged regular rates. From what I see, even so, it is still inexpensive!
