Internet Contributed £100 billion to 2009 UK Economy

A Google-commissioned study found that 60% of the total of this £100 billion was spent on internet shopping, spending on internet devices and internet connections. Also, the study shows that the United Kingdom is ranked first in eCommerce, with every GBP1 spent online to import goods while GBP2.80 is exported. Broadband penetration rate in the United Kingdom is about 73%.

The £100 billion contribution to the UK economy last year represents 7.2% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), higher than construction, transport and utilities industries. It is estimated that this contribution is expected to rise by about 10% a year and is expected to reach 10% of GDP by year 2015.

Need A Friend To Provide IT Support

I just spent a small fortune on a new printer and a new computer. I was very reluctant to replace my desktop computer because it was not even five years old yet and although some people told me that five years is a long time for a computer, I have used computers for seven years and more, so 4+ to me was still fine to me.

Unfortunately, after months of carting my computer to various computer shops to troubleshoot where I looked for both IT Support and hardware technical support as I tried to pinpoint the problem, and in the end failed, just gave up and decided to get a replacement.

I know, a friend kept saying that I am penny wise, pound foolish, and that I should just upgrade long ago. My cousin, who works as in IT Support London had also advised me to just get a new system but then I am someone who would use something until it is condemned before getting a new one.

Sometimes, I wish that I have a friend who could provide IT Support or at least understand how some things work better than myself so that I don’t have to cart my computer to the shop every time I am faced with a technical problem. It’s so tiring after months of running around with the half dead computer. Now that I have a new desktop computer, I can work so much faster. I am overall more productive!

MySpace Goes Back To Music

MySpace, in a bid to stop more of its users to move to Facebook, has launched a last ditch effort to revamp the social network site with a new design and a renewed focus on music. Will these efforts help MySapce retain its social music network crown?

Although I have a MySpace account and accounts with many other social networking sites, I have to say that MySpace and Facebook are very different. MySpace was launched way back before Facebook and even so, I hardly spent time on the site. This could be said for other social sites too.

But Facebook, it’s another kettle of fish. At first, I did have my reservations as well but once I found my way around, I find that I actually spent the whole day on the site, way more time than time spent all these while for all other social networking sites combined.

The attraction of Facebook is of course its game applications. MySpace’s attraction is in its music, whether new and undiscovered bands or established ones. So it’s really hard to think why MySpace users have strayed to Facebook since both have different focuses.

The only explanation I could think of is that we only have 24 hours a day. Once these people discovered social games on Facebook and addicted to them, they simply don’t have time for MySpace anymore, or any other social sites, for that matter.

FTC Closes Inquiry Into Google Street View

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said today that it has closed its file on Google’s disclosure that Street Cars used to collect information for its mapping service had inadvertently collected consumer data. This is following Google’s pledge that the company will not use any of such date for any Google’s service or product.

Although this is so, Commissions in some other countries continue to probe the company; rightly so since Google, though initially said that they have inadvertently collected just brief details of users over unsecured Wi-Fi networks, later discovered that the information captured in actual fact, contained entire emails and passwords.

This should be good news to Google. Though it seems like nothing could touch Google now, I hope that such news would alert people to check on their Wi-Fi networks and secure them, if necessary. You’d be surprised how many users do not even know if they are secured or otherwise!

LimeWire Ordered To Close Permanently

Peer-2-Peer file sharing website has been ordered by the court to close down permanently for violation of copyright on a massive scale. LimeWire has battled Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the courts for a long time so this looks like they have finally lost.

This is not the end of the story, of course, as the RIAA said that the court will conduct a trial in January next year to determine damages (and losses). Also, since LimeWire founder, Mark Gorton, has been found personally liable, I am afraid the long arm of the law will reach him.

Although I do not use LimeWire, I still feel sad that an open source P2P project has met its death this way. Not all sharing of large files are illegal but then there will always be people misusing a service, especially when it’s good. LimeWire was just a medium.

Google CEO Apologizes For Remark

If you have been following technology news, you would know that the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, has asked people to “move” if they are not happy that their houses have been captured on Google’s Street View. He later apologised, passing the remark off as a joke.

Whether it was a joke or just a misspeak and even though he has apologised for it already, I still think that it’s very arrogant of him to ask people to leave if they are not happy with being captured by the Google Street View Car. It’s not easy for people to just “move” and besides, why should we?

Anyway, for people who are not happy being caught on camera, albeit only their houses, they could write in to Google and ask that the image be removed. Google will comply, don’t worry, but surely, it’s a hassle to home owners! Don’t you agree?

Yahoo! Mail Revamped

Yahoo! Mail has undergone a revamp and many users are saying it is refreshing. I have a Yahoo! Mail account which I hardly use but just log in occasionally to check on my junk mail so this change, even though it’s long overdue, doesn’t affect me much. I understand that it has been almost five years since Yahoo! Mail had a major revamp. That’s like so long in internet age.

If Yahoo! Mail is still your primary email account, perhaps you should try out the new layout. There are many changes now and may I say, less clutter. There are fewer advertisements as well; you may notice that all on the left have been removed.

In addition, you can tweet without leaving your Yahoo! Mail page. As for me, I would rather use a Twitter desktop application! LOL other changes include font size, new colours, applications, and of course, simplified email filtering. I am thinking that with the new layout and so many new changes, people will need time to get used to it.
