Spock.com – The Real People Search Engine

This morning, my friend sent me a message and referred me to “Ipoh leng lui” (beautiful girl from Ipoh). I told him that it is a myth that Ipoh girls are prettier than girls from other states and those who said so did not live here long enough to see the ugly ones.

That gave me an idea to search on Spock to see if there are Ipoh girls there. I have used Spock.com – A Great Place for Search a couple of times and if memory serves me right, we used to have to register with Spock before we could get the code to embed on our blog or website.

What’s so great about Spock is that we re able to search for people based on tags or descriptions or based on their occupation, name or even location. This morning, I decided to look for “Ipoh girls”.

This is the widget for “Ipoh girls

What makes Spock different is that Spock tries to centralize a person on Spock by linking all our profiles from other social network sites like Friendster, MySpace, LinkedIn, hi5, Multiply and other webpages.

I registered with Spock and am surprised that this search engine managed to pull in my profiles from other sites accurately. However, out of the eight webpages that were linked to my name, only about two are about me. Another great feature is that with these webpages linked to me, I could vote to confirm their accuracy or to have them removed from my Spock profile. I could even ADD other webpages to my profile too. Tell me this is not different from all the social network sites that are around now.

If you are not yet already registered with Spock, I urge you to do so early to claim your spot on Spock and your profiles that are scattered all over the web. I admit that I did at first have reservations about putting personal information on a public domain but I soon learnt that we can control what we want to make public so I decided to register with Spock with my real name. I think that in the future, Spock would be like an online profile directory of real people, like what Yellow Pages is for businesses.

Spam Hits My Gmail

Did you notice that spam mail has hit Gmail lately? It used to be Gmail is so clean I would not even get two spam mail in Gmail for A WEEK! Now, if I do not log into my account, I would be seeing more than ten spam mail in my account. I do not log into my account because I check my mail through my mobile device.

I have four Gmail accounts and this trend is happening to three of my active accounts while the other one, which I do not use, is still clean. The thing is, these are personal accounts and I do not use them to sign up with any mailing lists or whatever, and yet I get all these spam mail.

Perhaps like spammers who spammed my Yahoo! Mail, they generate random English words as the user ID of email addresses. Ugh… I’m wasting time just deleting spam!

Win Serious Cash With Trivia Knowledge

The other day, I wrote a post about donating rice with our vocabulary. I recall a website that a friend recommended to me a couple of months ago where we can win serious cash just by using our knowledge on general trivia, music and movie trivia, sports and entertainment.

Actually, I knew about this site when it was newly launched but somehow I have forgotten about it and I really feel like kicking myself for all the lost opportunities when I could have played and WON! Yes, I am that confident of my trivia knowledge!

Just now, I accessed the website again and noted that a member was the lucky jackpot winner twice within thirty days. Wow, he must be amazing with trivia! Trivia On Net, whose website is at http://www.TriviaOnNet.com is the leading online multiplayer trivia tournaments and host too.

The good news is that membership is free and we are even paid $5 bonus. Upon our first top up, we will be given 25% extra as bonus. I have been told that with this money, the good players get to multiple their capital at a tremendous rate.

Unfortunately for me, the jackpots are only open to Americans and that also only for residents of certain states. This is due to the differences in state law. However, for international members and others who were unable to play for cash can still play the free games and join the community.

Swamped By Casino Sites

A friend told me that at a marketplace where she is a member of, the whole site has been swamped by casino sites. She said that she could hardly get any decent jobs because she does not want to write about casinos as her father was a gambler who wrecked his life and his family’s.

Well, I have nothing against casino sites but when they have overwhelmed the other members of the community then that is bad for business.

If I remember correctly, this place used to be swamped by plastic surgery sites and I am not saying they are no good either but then having the site full of the same thing will drive members away. I know that many of my friends don’t even bother to log in anymore.

Subscribing To Own Feed

I wonder how many people actually subscribe to their own RSS feeds. Well, I do. A couple of months ago, my friend said that she is going to set up a hundred email accounts and use these email addresses to subscribe to all her feed to boost up her feed subscription count. Oh my god…I think she did not see that through!

Well, the reason that I subscribe to my own feed is because I will read my own blogs from my feed reader and then find all sorts of typos and spelling errors and even grammatical errors.

It is weird that no matter how many times I spell check or check my grammar with MS Word and looking for the wiggly green line, I will miss them all and only discover them when I read my feed. Gah…. that refelcts badly on myself. *sob*

Too Dependent On Technology

It is so scary how dependent we are on technology. I friend just called me up to tell me that he can’t load his computer after it was forced shut this morning due to power failure. Well, you see, without the computer to work with, he is going to be wasting the night away. Of course, he has back up in the form of a laptop but then it does not help when all the graphic intensive software is installed on his desktop computer only.

This reminds me of the time my computer also could not load at all after a series of power failure that caused my computer to shut numerous times A DAY. That was before I bought my Universal Power Supply. Well, that episode wasted my one whole day. Of course, it did not take that long to do a clean install but then reinstalling all relevant programmes and configuring my preferences took quite a few hours as well.

I know of people who self impose a “no computer day” one day a week but I cannot do that. To be away from the computer for that long means that I would not be earning. In fact, even if I am not working at the computer, I am either watching movies, playing games, chatting with friends and browsing various websites, blogs and forums. It just shows how dependent I am on the computer and internet!

Complete Ranking

This morning, I was checking out my FireFox browser and then I saw this @ sign at the bottom of my browser. I have forgotten that I have installed Search Status. I have only set Search Status to display the Page Rank and Alexa readings of websites. I right clicked on it and discovered that it could also show the Complete ranking. Whoops, I did not know that.

I did not explore about Complete at all although I have heard of it. Someone told me a long time ago that Complete is more accurate, that it is not easy to manipulate, at least not as easy as Alexa.

But then I was also told that Complete will only record unique hits from Americans. Is that true? Why are American unique visitors any better than Malaysian unique visitors? Traffic is traffic, right?

To me, if you are on the web but you are not serving the global users, then your product is screwed and I am not talking about Complete here. Bleh.
