Compiling JPG Files Into a PDF File

I have a few documents that I wanted to share on my blog so I decided that the best way to do so was to scan the documents, save them into a PDF file and allow readers to download them from my blog. This is easier said than done because I could not scan and edit and save in a PDF file directly because each scanned document had to be edited and I couldn’t do so just before saving the files into a PDF file.

So after scanning and editing each document, I was left with multiple JPG files per book. I had to figure out how to compile them. I know that we could do that with Adobe Photoshop but I do not have that program. Actually, most of my installed programmes are freeware anyway.

So I spent the whole of last night searching for suitable free programs that could do this for me but they all have limitations either in the number of pages that it could compile or in the file size. My scanned documents were large because I selected high quality output. I figured that some people would want to print out after downloading.

I have to say after searching one whole night and couldn’t figure out how to compile my images into one PDF file, I asked a friend who game me a solution so easy, I need to share it here.

Just open MS Word, insert picture one by one and select “print to PDF” which actually saves your file into a PDF file from the print option. Of course, you will have to install software that would allow one to print to PDF. My friend recommended CuteWriter but I dislike it because it installs the ASK toolbar onto my computer even though I unchecked the option. I opted for the free version of PrimoPDF. It also will install a lot of stuff to your computer but that’s not spyware like a browser toolbar!

One In Three Internet-Bullied

I have to admit that the internet is a great platform that allows us to express ourselves but like everything in life, we have to know our limits. The Daily Mail (online) ran an article that says that one in three British students admitted to being bullied online especially on social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace, that have led to some suicides.

The internet is a great medium but it’s the people who misuse it that cause so much trouble. There is no doubt plenty of information online but as a user, we should know the right information from wrong. Life should just revolve around the internet, even though I see adults taking online life way too seriously too.

As for bully victims, suicide is not the way out because bullying goes by phases, victims change. The best thing about being bullied online is that we could just disconnect from the virtual world. Yes, we can do it even though most of the perpetrators are known to the victims, either through school or extra curricular activities.

Yahoo! Messenger v10 With Video Call

Yahoo! Messenger version 10 is out and ready for download. A major new feature is its video call, taking advantage of faster broadband speeds and cheaper broadband connections around the world to cut the cost of traditional video calling on smart phones.

I just checked my own currently installed version of Yahoo! Messenger and it is just version 9. Even though I hardly use Yahoo! Messenger to chat now, heck, I hardly even chat at all, I still do keep it logged on most of the time that my computer is connected to the internet.

Now should be a good time to upgrade my version of Yahoo! Messenger to v10, if only to try out its new video call feature. Of course, I don’t like to do it with my online friends but would only video call people whom I really know personally. The web has too many strange people!

Anyway, if you have already tried it out, do drop me a comment to let me know how you like it. I don’t really like to install resource hungry applications onto my computer!

Yahoo! Collaborates With Twitter

Following the footsteps of Google and Bing, Yahoo! has partnered with twitter in a bid to make its search engine more “real time” and will integrate the microblogging service across its entire Yahoo! suite of products.

It is not yet known how this will be implemented but from what we currently know, it will be one up against Google as Yahoo! users will be able to send out tweets from within a Yahoo! website. Google Buzz currently does not support this.

Currently, Yahoo! has already indexed tweets but the other integrations will only be expected to be launched later in the year. However, one could expect to receive tweets even via Yahoo! Mail. I think that one could easily be overwhelmed with tweets, most of which are nothing of importance at all.

Romantic Vacation On The Cards

My friend, Stevie, told me that he is planning a romantic vacation. It’s going to be like a honeymoon but since they have registered their marriage for some time already, it just doesn’t feel right calling it a honeymoon!

After much research on the internet, Stevie has decided on a romantic vacation riviera maya in Mexico! He said that it is going to be a surprise for his wife but he is so excited that he just has to share the good news with someone.

This is indeed a great decision. I have heard so much of the romantic beaches of Riviera Maya that if I were to get married, I would want to spend my honeymoon there. It would be even better to get married there! That would be awesome, wouldn’t it?

This You???? Twitter Phishing Message

Quite a number of Twitter users have been receiving messages asking, “This you???” These messages are accompanied by a short URL, which the recipient will inadvertently click on out of curiosity just to see if the link is really him or her. Little does the Twitter user know that clicking on the link leads one to a phishing website and by signing in, one gives away the log in ID and password of Twitter to an attacker who could then send similar messages to other Twitter users in the contact list of the first victim.

Having access to the log in ID and password of a twitter account would also mean that log in credentials of other websites could be compromised as well since most of us use the same credentials on a multitude of websites.

I wouldn’t say that this phishing attack is exceptionally malicious in nature since when one is directed to a phishing site, there is an option to log in or to close the browser. The worst kinds are those that steal your information as soon as you clicked on it.

Anyway, one cannot be too careful these days, even if the link or information comes from a trusted source and especially if we are not able to see the full URL of the link no thanks to URL shortening services!

Pre-Order Apple iPad This Thursday

Rumour has it that Apple iPad will be available for pre-order on Thursday, 25th February, 2010, though shipping will be a month later. This is for the WiFi version only since the 3G version will only be available in April. Not too long a wait, is it?

While I think that the iPad would be an awesome gadget to own, especially to play games with its 9.7 inch diagonal LED backlit glossy widescreen multi-touch display, I don’t think one should hurry when buying first generation electronic products!

The price for an iPad will range from US$499 to US$699 with 3G versions possibly more expensive, and this isn’t something that everyone could afford unfortunately, but yet, this isn’t a perfect product because again, flash doesn’t work! How awful could that be?
