Project 10 to the 100th Voting & Results

March 24, 2009 – 4:56 pm

Earlier this month, I wrote that Google’s Project 10 to the 100th has been postponed to 17th March 2009. However, that day has come and gone and today is already 24th March, 2009.

You know what? A couple of days ago, I went to visit the website of Project 10 to the 100th at http://www.project10tothe100.com/ and it looks like they have already taken down the date of revealing the top 100 projects for voting by public (17th March, 2009). Instead, we are asked to check the website later or leave our email address with them to receive an email notification when the list of 100 shortlisted projects is announced.

So what does this mean? I think that Google owes it to us to inform us if a new date has been set, or if they have decided that none of the 150,000 submissions are good enough or if they no longer think that they could afford the US$10 million to support such project(s) due to the global economic downturn.

  2. submitted an idea, no acknowledgement from google. not even an autoresponder. so i have no idea if they were able to receive it or just simply rejected it. I emailed them about it. I got stonewalled.

  3. I wonder if the issue is just the inherent difficulty in evaluating the submissions. I’m sure they got dozens of ‘make an engine to work on water,’ ‘make these guys agree not to cut down the rainforest,’ and ‘make a super efficient windmill using this design I have’ type ideas. They’re great ideas and it would be wonderful if they could work, but to put them up for a vote you really need to assess the possibility that they can be accomplished. Doing something like that for a complex technology or social project (say a windmill or group reconciliation) would require some significant labor and specialized skills. 150k submissions at 20 per person per day means you need a staff of 50 for six months just to do initial evaluations - IF each evaluation only requires the skills of a single person! That adds $1-2 million just for staff costs.

  4. I think most people are afraid to criticize Google for fear that their submission will be trashed.
If you just want to see what others think of your ideas try submitting them @ Halfbakery.com and you will get some feedback.
I’ve been a member for several years and have only submitted a few ideas just for fun.
Read the rules and be ready to hear what’s wrong with your idea If it has flaws. If it is a good idea you may get many + votes.

  5. I agree that it is Hereculian task to go through all the projects and evaluation. But Google can very well publish the date of results say this is the cut date, instead of disappointing lakhs of viewers waiting for months together. Planning may fail once, ok twice, but how long? Will Google hear this? I have a mothers feeling to know whether tobe born baby is a male or female or…….. One thing is sure : WE ARE REALLY DISAPPOINTED BY THE GOOGLES DELAY.
